Ask for a promotion and you may be asking for very little. Across 12 career ladders, many first steps up are worth under $5,000 at the national median: receptionist to administration assistant adds $2,000, chef de partie to sous chef $2,750. The big jumps come when the job changes shape, and project coordinator to project manager adds $60,000. With the national median stuck at $92,500 for a third month, promotions, not pay rises, are where the money is.

Key Findings
  • → Project coordinator to project manager is worth $60,000 at the national median, the biggest single promotion step across 12 Australian career ladders.
  • → Many first promotions pay under $5,000: retail assistant to assistant store manager adds $1,768, and chef de partie to sous chef $2,750.
  • → Construction has the steadiest ladder: labourer, carpenter, site supervisor and site manager each add $28,700 to $32,500, climbing from $70,000 to $160,000.
  • → Victoria was the only major state to add listings in October, up 1.0% to 36,074, while NSW fell 7.3% and Queensland 8.7%.
  • → The median advertised salary held at $92,500 for a third consecutive month, and only 35.6% of listings showed the salary in the ad.
The Hiring Landscape

Who is actually doing the hiring in October 2026?

Hands-on work still dominates the Australian job market. Trades & Services (22,425 listings), Healthcare & Medical (19,780) and Manufacturing, Transport & Logistics (16,624) together account for 31% of everything posted in October. Every major classification advertised fewer jobs than in September, and the falls were steepest in white-collar and consumer work: Retail down 10.7%, Administration 9.4%, ICT 9.3% and Construction 7.8%. Volume and pay point in opposite directions. Healthcare is the second-largest employer but sits at a $100,000 median, while Mining, Resources & Energy and ICT share the highest median outside general management, $160,000, on a fraction of the listings. The economy is busiest where it pays least, and pays most where it hires least.

The Promotion Premium

Which promotions actually pay?

A promotion inside the same tier is usually worth less than people expect. Across 12 career ladders priced at the national median, moves that change the title but not the job pay little: receptionist to administration assistant adds $2,000, administration assistant to officer $3,883, retail assistant to assistant store manager $1,768 and chef de partie to sous chef $2,750. Moves that change what you are responsible for pay many times more. Accountant to financial accountant adds $25,000, financial accountant to finance manager $35,000, store manager to area manager $25,250, and project coordinator to project manager $60,000. Two steps pay nothing: paralegals earn $5,000 less than legal assistants, and sales managers earn the same $125,000 as BDMs. Negotiate the scope of a role, not its title.

On the Move

Which roles are rising and falling fastest?

The month's biggest hiring increases came from Victorian public services and Brisbane construction. Registered nurse listings in Melbourne rose from 196 to 246, policy officer roles doubled from 26 to 53 (most at the VPS 5 rate of $128,631), and Brisbane contracts administrator listings jumped 48% to 105. The largest drops were in generic office roles: Brisbane administration officers fell from 147 to 84 and Sydney payroll officers from 102 to 58. Treat one-month listing swings with care, since many of these pages move 20 to 40% in either direction from month to month. The more durable signal is that pay held steady in almost every role that lost listings, so employers are hiring fewer people rather than paying less.

The Geography of Work

How much does your city change what you earn?

Canberra still pays the most at a $103,153 median, a public-sector effect, but it is down from $105,889 in September and represents just 3,541 listings. The more useful comparison is between the big states. Queensland advertised 40,835 jobs against Victoria's 36,074, yet pays $2,000 less at the median ($85,000 against $87,002). Melbourne-based Victorians earn about $3,000 less than Sydney's $90,000 benchmark despite comparable living costs, a gap also visible in September ($87,290 against $89,789). Perth and Darwin both sit at $100,000, driven by resources and construction rather than office work. Tasmania posted the biggest median rise, from $82,992 to $85,000.

Skills That Pay

Which skills command the biggest salary premium?

Cloud skills carry the clearest pay premium in October listings. Azure appears in 130 salaried listings at a $160,000 median, followed by CI/CD at $157,501 and AWS at $155,000, each 55 to 60% above the market median used in this table. The surprise is statutory reporting: an accounting skill, not a tech one, at $150,000. It tracks the financial accountant market, where Perth now pays $135,000, the highest in the country. Governance is the most common premium skill by far, appearing in 1,292 listings at $133,983, which makes it the most realistic premium for non-technical professionals. Python ($145,000) and SQL ($140,146) remain the most portable data skills across industries.

What Employers Actually Pay

What does the salary distribution look like when employers do disclose?

The real Australian salary sits between $70,000 and $90,000. Among listings that showed a salary, 21,162 (31.7%) fell in that band, and two thirds sat between $50,000 and $110,000. Only 9.1% advertised more than $160,000, and 3.8% more than $200,000. Listings that hid the salary are not uniformly lower. They split into two groups with very different pay: one sits at a $125,000 median and is dominated by ICT and mining roles, where most ads hide pay, while the other sits at $70,000. When you see a salary figure quoted elsewhere, check whether it includes hidden-pay listings, because that choice alone can move a median by tens of thousands of dollars.

Same Role, Different City

Does moving interstate actually change what you earn?

For most jobs, moving interstate changes almost nothing. Of 36 roles advertised in four or more cities, 5 pay exactly the same median everywhere: project engineers ($160,000), physiotherapists and occupational therapists ($100,000), and assistant store managers and storepersons ($65,000). Account managers vary by just $500. The exceptions are trades and construction. Electricians range from $100,000 in Adelaide to $134,368 in Perth, a 34% gap, and estimators from $125,000 in Melbourne to $160,000 in Sydney. For everyone else, a change of role is worth far more than a change of postcode.

For most jobs, the city on your offer letter barely changes the number on it.

Remote Work Reality

Is flexible work rare, and does it pay more?

Advertised flexibility is genuinely scarce: 1.8% of October listings were flagged as offering flexible or remote arrangements, unchanged from September. Where it appears, it does not come at a cost. Flexible listings that showed a salary had a $100,000 median against $92,500 for the rest, though that partly reflects the professional roles that offer it. Construction (3.2%) and Trades & Services (2.8%) flag flexibility most often, likely rostered arrangements rather than remote work, while Retail (0.6%) and HR & Recruitment (0.8%) almost never do. Verdict: available in a small minority of ads, and negotiated after the offer far more often than advertised before it.

The Bottom Line

What does October 2026 mean for your salary?

If you are weighing a promotion, ask what changes besides the title: in October's data, steps that add people, budgets or projects were worth $15,000 to $60,000, while title bumps within the same tier were often worth under $5,000. If you are weighing a move interstate, the payoff is real mainly in trades and construction, where Perth and Brisbane pay $25,000 to $35,000 more than the cheapest capital. Watch November's data for whether falling listings start to drag pay down, because so far employers have cut headcount, not rates.

This month's most unexpected finding

Some promotions pay nothing at all. Paralegals earn $5,000 less than legal assistants at the national median ($85,000 against $90,000), and sales managers earn exactly the same $125,000 as the business development managers they lead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about October 2026 salaries

What is the average salary in Australia in October 2026?

The median advertised salary in October 2026 was $92,500 among listings that showed a salary, unchanged since August. Two thirds of those listings paid between $50,000 and $110,000, and the most common band was $70,000 to $90,000.

Which city pays the highest salaries in October 2026?

Canberra has the highest median at $103,153, driven by federal public service roles. Perth and Darwin follow at $100,000, ahead of Sydney at $90,000 and Melbourne at $87,002. Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart all sit at $85,000.

How much is a promotion worth in Australia?

It depends on what the promotion changes. In October 2026 listings, title bumps within the same tier were often worth under $5,000 at the national median, such as retail assistant to assistant store manager ($1,768). Steps that add responsibility pay far more: project coordinator to project manager is worth $60,000 and financial accountant to finance manager $35,000.

Do you earn more by moving to another state in Australia?

For most roles, no. 5 of 36 roles advertised in four or more cities pay an identical median nationally, and many others vary by under $5,000. Trades are the exception: electricians earn $134,368 in Perth against $100,000 in Adelaide.

Are hidden salary ranges on job ads accurate?

Only 35.6% of October listings showed the salary in the ad. The rest hid it, but job boards still file each ad under a pay bracket set by the employer, which is where hidden-salary figures come from. Those brackets are real employer data, not guesses, but they are wider than a stated salary, so treat them as a range rather than an exact offer.
